Disable OS X’s Icon ‘Bounce Alert’

by Ricky Melgares on January 22, 2009

The one (and probably only) thing that has annoyed me when using OS X for the last couple of years is the icon ‘bounce alert’ feature. Everytime some application wants to get your attention for one reason or the other, it will perpetually bounce the application icon up and down. Notice that I said “perpetually.” This means that it will under no circumstances stop bouncing unless you actually click on the icon. This becomes quite a nuisance when you are sitting offscreen doing work or watching TV/movie. Luckily Rob Griffiths, from Macworld.com, has found a fix for this. To get rid of this ‘bounce alert’ feature once and for all, simply navigate to the Utilities folder located in your Applications folder, and open Terminal. Once at the prompt, denoted by the $ sign, type the following two commands:

The first command ‘defaults write com.apple.dock no-bouncing -bool TRUE,’ simply sets the boolean value to true, so that the dock will no longer bounce an icon in order to get your attention. The second command, ‘killall Dock,’ simply restarts the dock. If you decide to enable the ‘bounce feature again, simply repeat the above two commands with FALSE, instead of TRUE.
